Reframing

A wide shot filmed in 16:9 is nothing like vertical. Cropped to the centre, it cuts both speakers in half. That is the problem reframing solves, and it is the setting that changes a clip’s look the most.

You choose it in Generate (the Reframing setting), set its default in your brand template (Default reframing), and change it clip by clip in the editor.

Follows the face that is speaking. The frame moves when the speaking turn changes. It is the right choice most of the time: interviews, filmed podcasts, round tables, pieces to camera.

It is the default mode.

Follows the main subject rather than faces. Useful outside interviews: a demonstration, an object being handled, a shot where the action is not on a face.

Take it when automatic mode latches onto a face that is not the point of the shot — a presenter in the background while something else is being shown.

Keeps the whole image between two black bars. Nothing is cut.

Take it when the image carries information across its full width: a whiteboard, a score, a screen share, a video game with an interface in all four corners.

This mode opens one extra setting: Zoom between the black bars, from 0 to 15%. It trims the edges slightly to reduce the bars. It only has an effect in this mode. Set it in the brand template for the next generations, and clip by clip in the editor’s Reframe tool, then Apply.

The bars are black by default, and take any colour you choose: Bar colour, in the same place as the zoom. Your brand colour makes your clips recognisable at a glance. It moves nothing: the picture, subtitles and banner stay where they were.

Your video The mode
Two people talking to each other Automatic
One person to camera Automatic
Filmed podcast, several microphones Automatic

Video game, screen share None
Slides, whiteboard, charts None

Reframing can be changed afterwards, clip by clip, with the Reframe tool in the editor, with no new credit charge. If you do not like the result, change the mode on that clip rather than running the whole generation again. The editor is reserved for the Creator and Studio plans: on the free plan, the reframing chosen at generation is final.

The editor opens on the mode already applied to the clip: clicking Apply without touching it does not reframe it a second time.

On the blog, in French: converting a horizontal video to vertical without cutting off the speaker.
